JOZEF Puska was found guilty of Ashling Murphy’s murder after a three-week trial.
The 33-year-old, of Lynally Grove, Mucklagh, County Offaly, had pleaded not guilty to murdering Ms Murphy on January 12, 2022 in Cappincur, Tullamore, County Offaly.
The young teacher, 23, died after being stabbed 11 times in the neck in broad daylight while training on the Grand Canal in Tullamore.
The jury of nine men and three women reached a unanimous verdict after deliberations began yesterday.
Judge Tony Hunt thanked the jury for their service and exempted them from further duties for 20 years.
He said the quick verdict showed it was a straightforward case.
He said he agreed with the verdict and was satisfied that it was correct.
However, he said there was no doubt the case was “difficult and disturbing”.
